Avg ???

I run AVG on a Dell Laptop successfully and recently had an AVG warning that an Adware threat had been detected and should be cleared. I cleared the threat and it appeared to be cleared, but the message appeared several times again. Each time I attempted to have AVG clear the threat.
Now when rebooting the laptop, all appears to work with the desktop being displayed and the disk having mild activity, but I am unable to open any of the icons !!!
Please help.
