Well, i will be formatting my disk pretty soon and re-install XP, SP2. But i do not want to loose all the customizations that i made to the OS for over 6 months. By customizations, i mean, visual settings, folder views etc. Everytime i re-install i hav to go through the painful task customizing the OS for hours. I want to avoid that.

So i want to back these up. How do i do this. Will backing up my user profile do the trick. Again how do i do that.

PS: If i am posting this in the wrong section, please guide me. And also sorry for the noob query.

I know that True Image 10 can make a backup of the user profile. I've used it some time ago, and all the settings were restored well.

using true image or ghost would also restore all the crap built up, why are you reinstalling windows would be my question? If windows is spyware or virus and thats your reason, your just gonna likely restore your problems with it. Best to just remake any customizations you do in my humble opinion.

You are absolutely right. All these back up softwares will also back up the existing junk.

The reason i am reinstalling is that my CD/DVD combo drive is not working properly. So i will be taking my notebook to the service centre to get it fixed. My past experience tells me, that those guys will first reinstall my XP and then replace it. Don't ask me why, but thats how they do it. It happened before. Anyway, just a couple of days back i got infected by win5c.tmp.exe Trojan, which i believe i hav been able to remove. But u never know.

It seems that i don't hav much choice here, and will hav to go through the painful drill.

    Thx for the response though.

Go ahead and image it, it may not hurt if you have issues.
