backup. how and what program. ?

im new to backup im a shame to say,

so i would like to know how.
and how to make a CD or a DVD. with boot.

so i can restore it to the way it is now.


i once tried a backup program.
(win98) and it just took op alot of space.
and when i needed it to go back as it was i couldent get it to work,
i think it needed win98 to open. but it was windows that failed.

and i havent used it since.

but if i could make a disc that when put in drive would make my XP work
and restore it to the way i want it, that would be nice.

so i have looked and there is alot of programs under backup.

so im just looking for a free one and a good and easy one.
even for a noob,
