 Hello everyone! I've been getting a few BSODs here about this problem. It's been happening ever since a friend (unhappily, now deceased) built my computer. When the computer restarts after the BSOD I get a message that says my system has recovered from a serious error and do I want to send an error report to Microsoft. The only info I get from them is that an unknown device driver has been incorrectly installed. I have gone through the procedure to check the drivers, and nothing shows as a problem. The error message I get on the BSOD is BAD_POOL_HEADER. The memory will dump, the computer will reboot itself, and then everything works again, sometimes for weeks. Then I get a BSOD again. Today it went through the same thing at startup, and this time it didn't reboot itself, it told me to contact my system administrator. Unfortunately, that's me, and I don't have a clue about computers. Can anyone tell me what to do about this? Thanks!

What are you doing when this happens?

Is there more info that you can provide ...it is usually a driver issue that could be either video/sound/nic cards ....

Hello TimW - I've kept track of the last 3 - once I was in the Internet, I think just reading MSN news, and twice it happened right at start-up. I turned on the computer, it gave me the log-in screen, I chose my own (we have 4), my desktop came up, and then the BSOD appeared. In the message, it tells me to contact vendor for BIOS updates (what ARE bios, anyway?), disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing (and what on earth is THAT?) and then restart in safe mode if I can't start up normally. I hope this helps!

Your bios is the hardware/motherboard/system configurations ...usually accessed by hitting f11 or f2 or esc. key ....it is usually shown briefly as the puter starts up ...

Here is some info on bios setups:
    http://www.rojakpot.com/freebog.aspx

But first, go to control panel / admin tools / event viewer and look for errors in both the system and applications sections ....there will probably be a few ...give us the error code for those that correspond to the time of the crashes...

and the next BSOD ...copy the error message ...if it is a stop code write that down as complete as poss.

Hi TimW - Sorry it took so long to reply - lots of info to compile. Today is your lucky day - I got a BSOD just for you! I had just started up and was playing FreeCell (losing, too!) when it happened. The message was BAD_POOL_HEADER. The stop error is: 0x00000019 (0x00000020, 0xE53E3C30,
0xE53E3C58, 0x0C050803). Then the memory dumped to 99, the computer rebooted itself, and now works fine. Microsoft informed me my system had recovered from a serious error, and SpyBot told me something was trying to change Kernel Fault Check (global system startup). Now, that happens every time I get a BSOD, and I always deny that change, because I don't know what it is. My event logs were:
    Applications: no errors
    System: 11:52:16 - Service Control Manager - None - 7000 - N/A
    11:52:12 - System Error - (102) - 1003 - N/A
    11:51:38 - sr - None - 1 - N/A
    11:39:48 - Service Control Manager - None 7000 - N/A
I'm going to post this quick before I get logged out again for taking too long, and post further reply with more info re previous BSODs.

That BSOD usually refers to a hardware issue ...have you installed some new hardware recently? If so ...remove it and reboot ....check that it is a compatible peice of hardware and that the drivers and correct for your system....

    Hi TimW-
As far as I know, all the hardware is the same as ever - and I have been having this problem from when my friend built this computer. He passed away before he had a chance to take it apart and find out what was wrong, and I (of course) don't know how to do anything.

In reviewing my event logs, this is what I found:
Applications: There were no errors that coincided with BSODs, but I had two main types:
    Application Error - None - 1001 - N/A
    Application Hang - (101) - 1002 - N/A
These usually occurred about every two weeks, in no particular pattern.
    Once I got:
    LiveUpdate - None - 56 - SYSTEM.

I also got LOTS of warnings, which were always
    Userenv - None - 1517 - SYSTEM
These occur every day, sometimes several times a day. On 14OCT, my husband got 12 of these warnings in 4 seconds:
MsiInstaller - None - 1001 (alternating with 1004). I have NO IDEA what he was doing.

In System, I found errors pretty much every day: Service Control Manager - None - 7000 - N/A. I suspect the days with no errors were days I didn't turn on the computer. I get warnings there, too:
    WinDefend - None - 1006 - N/A
    Tcpip - None - 4226 - N/A

Also, thinking about what you said earlier about it maybe being a sound card, I started a thread last June re problems with my Windows Media Player freezing. I am still having that problem, although I discovered a couple of days ago that if I just leave it alone long enough, like 10 minutes or more, it will accept the info changes I've made and continue working. Could this be the hardware causing this problem? Any suggestions on how to find out? Thanks!

p.s. I do have Norton Antivirus and Security on the system, and I use Adaware, SpyBot Search and Destroy and Spyware Blaster, and CCleaner.

although this an OLD conversation, it is a VERY NEW issue for me. I did the check discussed above and found the following error codes in the event view of the admin section
    ...."3013"

In my case the BSOD came up after I loaded a CD that I had just created using Design Pro by Avery.
