Base Ram

I'm trying to play a an older game (Darksun Shattered Lands) that is DOS based. When I go to install it it says that I only have 585 kb of free ram and I need 605 kb.
I have over 650 MB of RAM and never use more than 250MB of it, but it says something about Base Ram being the first 64kb of Ram. How do I free up more of this "Base Ram"

 

Try removing any TSR's (Terminate & Stay Resident) programs from you autoexec.bat and config.sys files.

Google for DOS command, ............LOADHIGH............. Implementing the loadhigh command will free up more ram below 640K. I think, from memory, we got a maximum of over 615k free using DOS 5.0 in the "olde" days. Bazza

Try placing the command "DOS=high,umb" in your config.sys file and rebooting.

 

From the C:\ prompt, type in ........mem /c /p......... This will show all stuff that is loaded and whether it is in high memory or in memory below 640Kb. It will also show a memory summary giving the total available/free below 640Kb. I can't remember, for sure, but if you try .......mem /c >prn........it should print out the details. Let us know what is being used below, and above, 640kb ( and it's size) and we can progress from there. Bazza
