try draining the battery completly 100% then recharging it?

Done. That is what caused me to notice this problem, namely the battery lasting less than 40 minutes, and now having been charging for several hours and only gone from 24% to 26% charged.

How old is the battery? They have a finite lifespan. It may just be time for a replacement.

Yup, sounds like the battery has gone south...

Less than a year old. It should not fail in so short of a time.

I google the battery thing, and they should last 18 months, any longer, and you got more bang for the bucks.

typical LION batter will last 18-24 months depending on how it was stored (temp/humidity) and how it was used. Don't keep your laptop on AC power all the time, the constant trickle charge will kill the battery, it's something we see a lot here. People will buy a laptop, it sits on the desk and it's always plugged in. Aside from that, if it looks like the charging circuit is alright then it's probably the battery. Have you called Gateway about getting a replacement? Does the warranty cover the battery?
