    Hi,

I have Googled this and most of the links are well out of date.

    Any suggestions?

    Hi:

I've started using this on XP HE, XP Pro and Vista Home Premium:
    JkDefrag (free) http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/

That linked page will tell you quite a bit on how it works and the strategy behind how it defrags and organizes data.

MajorGeeks does list it too http://www.majorgeeks.com/JkDefrag_d5542.html
but you should read that linked page first.

If you decide to use it, you should disable Windows' bundled defragger (idle defrag).

In XP Tweak UI is best: Start >All Programs >Powertoys for Windows XP >Tweak UI >General >uncheck "Optimize hard disc when idle". >Apply >OK.

    For Vista: >Start >All Programs >Accessories >System Tools >Disk Defragmenter >uncheck the "Run on a schedule (recommended)" box >OK.JkDefrag

    Happy trailz,
