I have just stopped using McAfee and switched over to several free anti-malware programs: PC Tools Firewall Plus, avast!, and COMODO BOClean. Is this a good combination of anti-malware software or should I use something different? I found these through the "How to protect yourself from malware" thread, but I wasn't sure about BOClean & avast!. It says to have only one real-time scanner, but it lists separate scanners for viruses and spyware. Does this mean I should have one for each?

As of May 26, 2009, BO Clean received its last update and will no longer be supported as stand alone tool. It is now integrated into Comodo Internet Security. See this: http://forums.comodo.com/comodo_boclean_antimalware/boclean_antimalware_board_closed_product_discontinued-t38706.0.html

So you may want to consider uninstalling Avast, BOClean, and PC Tools Firewall and replacing them with Comodo Internet Security to see how it performs for you. It is not quite the resource hog as other internet security suites developed by companies like Symantec, McAfee, F-Secure...etc.

Otherwise you will have to just uninstall BOClean and use something else for real-time antispyware protection. There aren't too many free choices especially for ones that are good. AVG8+ includes antivirus and antispyware but AVG8 has been problematic as mentioned in the How to protect link.

Yes it means you need to have one and only one of each type of protection. It did not say have only one real-time scanner and scanners are not the issue. It is real-time protection that is the issue. You only want one antivirus, one antispyware, and one firewall that have real-time protection features. Things like the free SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes have no realtime protection and you can have as many as you like.

Thank you, that was very helpful. I'll try the Comodo Internet Security Program and see how that works out. That covers real-time anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall?
