I am interested in buying a new PC used for gaming. My budget is about $1000. Does anyone know a good website for configuring/buying the best possible gaming PC for around this amount? Thanks for any help.

i got myself a dell xps studio 1800 it has 8GB ran 1TB harddrive and an intel core i7 it costs around the price that you have posted its served me pretty good so far gievn the fact that i rarely use it for gaming still a good machine for what you intend to use your new system for

Your best possible value/highest performance for your money is going to be to build your own. Newegg and TigerDirect are your best friends in that case. They also sell prefab.

i strongly agree with scoobyshack on that one i forgot to mention it, there are various benefits for building your own pc and not going out and buying a pre-built one, to start the majority of the price for your machine when its pre-built is the operating system (we don't really mind paying for this) all of the free trial software (this is the waste of money here seeing as though an experienced computer user won't use these). another benefit besides price is that upgrading your hardware is easier. from my experiences these major computer suppliers like hp, dell and emachines make it difficult to upgrade hardware by making the screws hard to reach. building the case as confusingly as possible and making the case hard to open (tried it on all of the mentioned brands of dekstop pc the new parts that are intended for machines that i intend to install them in won't fit inside even though the older parts are very similar to the new ones)

the best benefit is just have a little fun its a great learning experience

Thanks to all for the advice. I kinda figured building my own was the only way to go given my budget restraints. Will check out the sites you recommended.

Also Ibuypower has good computers. They use common parts and not custom OEM made parts. However building your own the best way to go.

Ya, +1 for building yer own and as you want a gaming machine the main cost is going to be your graphics card which will then tell you what you need as a proper power supply. I would go AMD Phenom quad and as high end of an ATI graphics card as you can afford as you'd get better performance/price as opposed to Intel/nVidia.
