OK been hanging around in the everquest channel dungeon on IRC fishing about for ideas. I want to get into an MMOrpg, never played one before, and have finished all my current games 3 times over. I was suprised to hear nothing good about everquest there as most of the people had played it for years and become sick of it in the end. A lot had switched to WOW and some to EVE online. Can anyone recomend the best // a good MMOrpg for me to get into. I don't mind paying to play if the game is worth it. Looking for an immersive experience with a long life. I'm more geared towards the fantasy setting than the Eve sci-fi style games but I don't really mind. Heard good things (and bad) about Guildwars, Everquest 2, WOW, EVE, Runescape (mostly bad there though). Remember I'm new to this and an easy learning curve would help.

Thanks for any advice. Maybe theres some I don't know about that are better than the main games on the shelves.

    Guildwars isn't an mmorpg.

Everquest 2 is nice, but its a serious timesink and requires a beefy machine to get full graphical details. PvP was an afterthought, and after they revamped my characters (for the worst), I quit.

    I've never played Eve Online.

WoW is decent, doesn't require such a beefy computer for full details and resolution, and the time sink isn't as massive. Quick levelling and good PvP. I quit due to lack of time to play.

Final Fantasy XI was fun, but the learning curve is steeper than most, and it also is a massive time sink. It also is quite noticeably a console port, although it is fine once you get used to the nuances.

I think I should point out that all mmo's are time sinks, and thats kinda the idea. If a casual could get to the level cap in a month or two, then the power gamers would get there in a week or less, and the game better have really good end-game content, or it will not survive.

from my experience (Dark Age of Camelot, Star Wars: Galaxies, EverQuest 2, Final Fantasy XI, WoW) I would have to say that I enjoyed Daoc and Swg the most, however Daoc is considered very old by todays standards and SWG is not even the same game anymore...so I hear.

The easiest learning curve is WoW by a landslide, and it dosnt take a super nice computer, and a TON of people play it.

I currently play EQ2 and only have a lvl 31, so I cant really judge that game yet, but I like it so far.

I really enjoyed FFXI (being a FF fan), but it was difficult for me to get "plugged in" to the community. The game uses "linkshells" in place of guilds, which are just basically access to a specific chat channel, linkshells are dropped and picked up like crazy and it kind of takes away from the idea of a tight knit group. Did not try crafting in this game, but other aspects seemed really fun and I really liked grouping in that game.

Almost everyone says DAOC is a good game, I don't mind about the age of a game as I'm more into the gameplay than the graphics, and I don't have a beefy machine by any standards. WOW doesn't sound appealing to me as it seems more of a mainstream game and I prefer the the proper Warhammer style experience. Warcraft to me is Ork's and Human's, Tides of Darkness, Reign of Chaos etc...
Thanks for the information though might give Everquest 2 a try and maybe Eve Online if I can afford a new graphics card anytime soon. Think the only way I can decide is to get my hands dirty and just try a few.

Right, and they usually have the first month free as a trial, in fact, you can download a trial version of everquest 2 without purchasing the game, called trial of the isle or something like that, its limited to the newbie island you start out on, and you cant progress past level 5 or 6, but may give a good idea as to the gameplay.

In my opinion Daoc was the first (only?) game to actually get PvP right. Its fun, and can maintain your interest in the game after the level cap. They also have battlegrounds limited to a certain level, like 24-29, so you can pvp against similar level enemies earlier on in the game. Im sure you can go out and buy the full version of the game plus expansions for like $30 now. maybe cheaper.

Try the EVE online trial before you buy it, i personally didnt like it too much. Relatively steep learning curve (after an hour of the stupid tutorial i still had almost no idea what the heck i was doind). I play Guild Wars although its not necessarily an MMO. No monthly fee which is a plus. By far the most popular is WoW, never played it myself but my friends love it. City of Heroes and City of Villains are pretty fun and very easy to pick up. Auto Assault is coming out soon which i enjoyed from the beta weekends. I also liked EQ2, didnt find it too hard to learn but the world is freakin huge and its had to find ur way around. Ok, thats my list, gl finding a game you like.

O i thought of another one, Lineage 2. Good reviews and looks fun, same creator of Guild Wars and City of Heroes; NCsoft. The expansions are free as well.

Speaking of free. If you have never played an MMO before, and you want to get some idea what kind of a grindfest you are in for, play silkroad online, its free and is supposedly not too bad.

Having played EQ, EQ2, SWG, FFXI, DDO, CoH, and WoW, here are my takes on all those games.

EQ was a great game, it was, imo, the original. I played EQ public release and have to admit that EQ holds some of my fondest gaming memories. Current day though, I would be hard pressed to recommend it 2 anyone wanting a new mmorpg. The player base, is for the most part, Hardcore. All the top guild are already filled out and not really accepting apps. And having someone in your group at ALL times that has been playing the game for 3+ years as most people have, really takes the fun out of it. That and the fact that the current items are overpowered really takes the challenge out of the game.

EQ2 was just OK. As the succesor to EQ I had high hopes for this one, but lack of content, and grouping when i was playing (got it a week after public release) turned me off from the game. I quit shortly after they made ALL items attunable.

SWG was a great game when it was first released despite all of its bugs. Now with the multitude of revamps its is complete crap. I survived all the combat upgrades only to have my class (creature handler) REMOVED from the game. Talk about a slap in the face.

FFXI was a great game and i still play it occasionally. It is however, as mentioned a huge timesink. The learning curve isnt too bad, however, combat is more involved then most mmorpgs. I personally think that makes it all the more interesting.

CoH, played it, dont like tights. 'nuff said.

WoW great game, still play it, graphics, gameplay, player base, all top notch, i really have nothing bad to say about WoW other then the MASSIVE amount of farmers on all servers. I think WoW would be a great place to start for someone trying to jump head first into MMORPG's.

DDO I just got last week, so far it has been good, the graphics are well done, it stays true (for the most part 2 pnp dd) and is over all a well done game. Lack of high end content is a problem (as two of the high end dungeons keep on being taken down for repairs) but that is to be expected of any game right out of the starting gate. Beware however, most people in DDO think everyone who plays DDO played pnp, id read up on it to keep from being called a noob.

Hope this helps, sorry about being longwinded!

PM me if u want any of my toons information should you start playing any of the games above (other the CoH). Ill see you in game!

rofl I hear that word a lot : "grind". Dont like the sound of that hopefully I can stay laid back enough during play not to get that deep but I doubt it. Is Lineage 2 a fantasy game and is it new or been around for a while?

Also Viper I looked up Auto Assault that looks amazing. Mad Max MMOrpg, thats about as good as it could get. Like that old Games Workshop game Dark Future with a Fallout feel to it as well.

    Cheers

Tubnotub1 - thanks for that post enlightened me a lot. I'm thinking then maybe I'll go for WOW as, though it doesn't sounds like exactly what I'm looking for you say it's a good starting point and I'll learn the ropes of how things work. Not sure what you mean by farmers though :)

Another couple of questions for you. What is DDO and PNP? You say DDO is new so thats interesting. Also just for a laugh what is COH?

I read an article by a german player of WOW who quit the game becuase he had reached level 60 and said the only thing left to do was get some Tier 2 mega armour or something. So he joined this guild and they started raiding (don't understand what all this means but i get the gist). He said this guild he joined had rules, somewhere along the line of :::

We raid 7 days a week and you are required to be here at least 5 days or face dismissal.
New members have a trial period of 3 months until you can bid on loot.
If you can't be here on a particular day we need one weeks notice.

It made me laugh sounded more like work than a game but hopefully like I say maybe I can avoid getting too involved. I'd prefer to be off doing my own thing anyways ninja style to an extent :)

    cheers again very informative

and farmers are people who, either through third party macros or full time work, accumulate currency in a game in massive amounts and then sell it on ebay or thier own website for real world $$$$.

First of, CoH is City of Heroes. Secondly, didnt read the above until now. You might consider just playing an online mmorpg to get you used too the idea of it until 2007 when Warhammer Online comes out. Below is a link to the official web site. Warhammer Online from what I have read is going to be PvP based (not PvE) out of the box, very much like DAoC. It might be exactly what you are looking for!

PS. Mythic Entertainment is developing Warhammer Online... those are the same people behind DAoC.

splitt3r You are now the victim of a drive by title change

WoW is great. It is a HUGE world full of instances, it is very PvP opriented once you rech level 60, I know at least 3 people, including my dad who are extremely addicted to that game.

well, I prefer Second Life, lol and I'm sure alot of you are more into the killing and shooting and monster sides of the game, but Second Life I guess is more like TSO based, but with much better graphics, a HUGE world, and endless possibilities. There is huge opportunity to make real money there too, if you have good building, scripting, selling skills.

How about endless online? The graphics are 2d and it is hard to make money but it is very fun and addicting. It is huge and almost no one looks the same.

The best MMORPG is a very personal decision. I've played almost every MMO that has been released. For a first time MMO player, I would tell you to play World of Warcraft. If you can give more detail about the type of gameplay you are hoping for, we can all give better insights.

If you don't want to pay monthly I recommend Guild Wars to you which is good. It seems too.. limited.. i guess to me.

If you don't want to pay AT ALL, I would recommend Silk Road to get used MMO's.

Now if you're really looking for a good game, I HIGHLY recommend World of Warcraft. Maybe it's just because I'm a WoWaholic, but it's an amazing game. Just the fact that you can jump in it make me want to play it. But you can get professions and there's a LOT of armor sets, spells, weapons. There are millions of people who play it worldwide.

I heard Starwars Galaxies WAS good until some patch which really screwed it up.

    There's my 2 cents. :)

i dont know if anyone mentioned this one because i was too lazy to read all the posts. i just started playing Ultima Online again on a free server if you wanna give it a try you can download it for free at http://gamespot.com search for ultima online gold

to play it on a free server you will need to download a program called Razor.
for Razor to run you also need to download .NET Framework http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=262D25E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3&displaylang=en

if your interested in playing this game and are having trouble finding razor email me at reign_37@yahoo.com and ill email it to you. i dont think its that big. ill also send you a help file to get started on UO.

and when u get to razor choose the server Divinity

Regarding free UO, isn't that illegal?

if they allow you to download the entire client legally then i dont think it is. your just choosing to not play on a server you have to pay for.

if the owners of this site believe that it is illegal then i apologize for having posted it.
