The best resolution, is what your video card can handle and what your cpu can handle.

I have a BFG 6800OC with unlocked pipelines (near 6800gt), with a XP 3200+ (barton core). I typically run games at 1024x768. Which is fine for me.

I run at max available by the lcd or crt; i do prefer 1600x1200 though. anything smaller then max LCD resolution strains my eye sight.

    Me too.

best option is to play your favoured game at a few different resolutions and find whats best for you.

    1280x960 is a standard 4:3 resolution, just like 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, and 1600x1200.

1280x1024 is not, and causes things to distort, although few will notice it. As well, some video drivers dont like it (1280x960).

I try to play at 1280x960 when I can, but for 2D purposes I use 1280x1024, because for whatever reason, my display blurs at 1280x960. Its only happened since the last couple ATI Catalyst versions. Not sure what they did, but they did it ;)

Maybe. I know not all of them are 5:4, seeing how there are widescreen ones now.

The thing is, when I talk about distorting, Im talking about things like circles, not being true circles, but squashed a bit to be ovals and such. Distortion probably isnt the right word, out of proportion is a better term.

Maybe its different with LCDs. I can test it, if I get motivated enough.

Edit: If LCDs are 5:4, that also means that standard resolutions like 1024x768 are not going to show the image correctly.

when i play games i dont really see the difference between 1152x1024 and 1600x1200, so i play on 1152x1024 and its okay.
