Best software for converting AVI files

    What is the best programme to use for converting AVI file so that they can then be burned onto a dvd for viewing on a dvd recorder?

    If using nero 6 and two different avi files need to be converted using this AVI converter how do you put the two together using nero so that it fits onto one disc, that is, you do not need to use two seperate discs for the same film.
    I hope that i have placed this in the right forum because i am quite new to all of this as you can guess.
