In my opinion the best consumer or retail package is Adobe's Premiere

There are a few others that are free that do good jobs, but with less functionality.

Assuming that your running a PC, in my personal opinion I would say Premiere Pro. I will agree that Vegas is also a good editing program, but Premiere has more options, and better codec's to choose from. If your running a mac: Final Cut Pro is one of the best by a mile. All of these progams do one thing better than the next, so you really have to decide which will work best for you. If you are just having some fun editing your home videos, I would save some money and buy Vegas. If your looking for quality, and a professional editor, I would but Premiere. Again, on a Mac: Final cut pro is one of your best choices (coupled with Shake 3).

    Best of Luck. :)
