Is Blu-ray really better than regular DVD? In what way is Blu-ray better? In
the near future I'm going to buy a DVD player for my TV.

there's a couple of differences with the obvious being there 4 times the resolution which in practice means there is far more detail on offer and this is detail you can see rather than just being a specification

    then there's the sound
on regular dvd the best you can achieve is dolby digital 5.1 or on a few select films ( star wars being the obvious ) THX
Blu-Ray now gives you DD 5.1 DTS and HD DTS / DD ( usually DTS ) which in practice sounds better than DD 5.1 through an appropriate surround system
apparently HD Audio surround can only be achieved through HDMI as normal digital out hasn't got the bandwidth

something to think about before you make your mind up

Is a Ferrari better than a Ford Pinto? Blu-Ray players not only have better playback quality, but also offer Online video services viewing, such as Netflix. Get what you can afford, but I will tell you this, if you go cheap, you will notice it in the quality of the player.
