Blurry Streaks Across Monitor

I've had the same monitor for quite some time now, (Several years) but only recently have I started noticing this problem I've been having.

It's a problem mostly with my text, and is happening as we speak in a rather obvious manner against the white background I'm typing in.

Everything is leaving blur marks (somewhat like motion blur) going to the right for at LEAST 3 inches. If I'm reading an article or something, it looks as though my computer's got stripes across it. I originally had another monitor sitting to the right of it, and figured this could've been the problem. Magnets or something. But the monitor has long since been moved from there, and the problem remains..

I tried to simulate the problem using photoshop, but it's hard to tell with my monitor the way it is how well it came out, since I'm basically drawing the problem right over the actual problem.

    Any ideas?

    Give us a chance!! ;)

Does this occur in all screen resolutions? ie if you boot to safe mode which is just 16 colour VGA do you still experience the problem?

    is it a crt monitor?

if so, have you tried degaussing it. That option should be available on the onscreen menu somewhere.

also if it is not permanently attatched to the monitor you can try changing the monitor cable.

As Yargwel stated, if it does it in Safe Mode, it's more than likely the monitor.

    If not, probably a driver.

I had this happened to me just last week and had to reinstall my video card drivers.

Sorry. I don't mean to sound impatient, but my topic went flying down and off the page without so much as a view. So, I wanted to make sure it at least got some attention before it died. x:

I tried running at 800x600 before posting, and the problem was still there. So, it's there on every resolution.

I've degaused several times. I sat around for about 5 minutes, degausing my monitor until the vibrations became small, and this didn't help.

I tried running safe mode, and at first, it looked as though the problem was gone, but I noticed a faint streak to the side of my cursor, and after opening some text files, the streaks were clear as day.

I updated my graphics card just a second ago, and restarted my computer, the streaks are still there.

I guess the monitor's busted. As I said, I had another CRT monitor sitting right beside the monitor I have now. It wasn't on, or working, but it was very close to the monitor, and on the same side the streaks are running toward.

I figure maybe the magnetic field of the monitor beside mine pulled the lasers or something, and now it's causing everything to blur off to the side.

Believe it or not, sometimes the direction and where you have the monitor can affect it.

CRT's are very sensitive to any interference. That's why they make southern and northern hemisphere monitors.

Having said that, another monitor that isn't powered shouldn't really affect it, but if you have another one, hook it up if you haven't (I only skimmed quickly through this thread so may have missed it) and that will tell you if it's the monitor or PC.

I had to abandon a monitor that was doing that because it could no longer be degaussed. This was a very old gateway monitor that lacks any buttons or controls for degaussing. I could overcome some of the issue with brightness and contrast, but finally gave up. You'd think they would last more than 10 years! There were some claims on the internet that a running electric drill could be waved around near the screen to clear it up, but that did not work for me.

Good thing new monitors are fairly cheap now. Used ones are real cheap on ebay or from local places clearing out older leased equipment.
