First you will need a floppy boot disk for the O/S you want to boot to. MSDOS 3.x through 8.x uses one disk, XP uses six disks to boot.

Hardware settings for the floppy are set in the machines bios.

Then you need to ensure the floppy drive is set as the first boot device in the bios.

Boot disks are generally made from either a file which has been downloaded (as above), or a CD (Like Win98).

    Hi Sonia,

Dan is correct. Win 98, XP etc. can make you a boot floppy with diagnostics. Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Startup disk. Extremely handy for trouble shooting. Set your BIOS SETUP for boot order, Floppy, CD, Ide. Put the floppy in the drive and start the computer. You will end up in DOS at prompt A:>.

    Good Luck, Jim
