Right, so. Picked up Braviax.exe / PC Antispyware 2010 while browsing around - damned popups. Actually picked it up a couple of weeks ago, worked on removing it myself, and MBAM / ComboFix / CCleaner seemed to have pryed it off, but was surfing around again today and it popped back up, more annoying than ever. Was looking around for some way to deal with it, and found Vipre Antivirus - so far, it's the best thing I've picked up. It'll delete the braviax.exe file from running with a scan, but can't actually permanently remove the program/rootkit. It buys me enough time to get in and do whatever needs to be done, though - at least for the next 14 days while it's in free trial mode. MBAM won't even permanently delete Braviax.exe - it says it will when it reboots, but it's always there when the computer comes back up. So!

I went through the Read & Run Me First thread, and went through the Windows XP Cleaning thread - I've got the logs, and I'll attach them here - but RootRepeal will not run. It hangs on Initializing and locks up the computer. I researched trying to fix that and can't find anything that works. Sorry. I've got the other files, though, and I've got Avenger.exe already if we need it.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    Uninstall the below software:
    Ask Toolbar
    Java(TM) 6 Update 11
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7
    Viewpoint Media Player

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O3 - Toolbar: Ask Toolbar - {3041d03e-fd4b-44e0-b742-2d9b88305f98} - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\askBar.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mset] C:\WINDOWS\system32\mset.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Regedit32] C:\WINDOWS\system32\regedit.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [mset] C:\Documents and Settings\Pratz Strike\mset.exe
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: cru629.dat

NOTE: HJT may popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run MSconfig and put your PC into normal startup mode as requested in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

OK, got everything done and run - setting the system back into Normal Startup mode was a little wracking, because I had half a dozen programs all pop up that wanted to run at once that I'd forgotten to set to not start up when the computer started. However, the important thing is that PC Antispyware 2010/Braviax.exe seems to be nowhere to be found. The computer is fussing at me about not having beep.sys on my system, and I don't know if that's a big thing or not, and a couple of my old Nvidia dlls are apparently still trying to load after being deleted some time back (and I'll have to see if I can't figure out how to clean those out - CCleaner to the rescue?) but otherwise it looks like things are back to ship-shape. The logs are uploaded man, see if I have a clean bill of computer health at this point, and if so, I'll go back to wrecking it again. :-D

But if you use MSconfig to tell them not to startup, you would not be in normal startup mode. Thus this is the way we wanted it to startup.

That's because it was infected and needed to be removed. You had no backups to restore from. Download this and save it to your C:\Windows\system32\drivers folder

Because you had them trapped in MSconfig when you uninstall in the past. One of many reasons MSconfig should not be used.

Not if you mean to control startups! It just uses MSconfig registry keys and leaves no indications that it is doing so. Thus registry keys appear to be dead. If you don't need the startups processes or services then they should be totally removed. A topic for the Software Forum since this is not malware.

Your logs are clean but you have a couple dead services trapped in MSconfig to cleanup.

Now copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

OK, the registry edit worked just fine, and saved successfully. I ran through all the cleanup steps, and it seems to be working just fine now. Thank you very much for the help, I do appreciate it. Hopefully I won't ever have a reason to come back to the Malware Removal part of the site except to maybe comment on a thread!
