I am having browser problems. This started a couple of days ago when my son was on the computer. When I search for somehting, I get random web pages or search engines. I ran Comodo virus scan and deleted the files it came up with. I also ran Malware Bytes and deleted those files also, but the problem remained. I then tried to do a system restore but got this error message "System restore has been turned off by group policy".

I followed the steps in the "Read & Run Me First" guide. I could not get Combofix to work. I keep getting the error "windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file".

RootRepeal would run and scan my C drive, but fail to initialize for the D drive. I keep getting "Encountered a problem and needs to close".

I was able to complete the SuperAntispyware, malwarebytes, and MGtools scans. The logs are attached. Any help is appreciated.

    Thank you,

    E

    Welcome to Major Geeks!
Did you have ALL of Comodo shutdown before downloading and running ComboFix?? If not then try again with Comodo shutdown.

    Either way, do the below.

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -v
    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )
I strongly advise you to cleanup your Desktop. Remove eveything but links to run programs. Do not download and save programs here and defintely do not use it for long term storage. You need to keep ComboFix.exe here for now as we need it, but we will be removing it when we are finished with your cleanup. A cluttered Desktop is malware's playground and it can also cause performance degradation especially when you start saving large files here like you are doing.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C4BF49A2-94F1-42BD-F034-3604811C807D} - (no file)
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\MSMSGS.EXE" /background
    O9 - Extra button: Go PlaySushi! - {5CFA5B80-01F4-420F-B18B-545712C8A1C8} - http://www.playsushi.com/About.ps?l=3&t=nzGV4v4nv (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Delete all of the below folders from trying to run ComboFix. They are all in your root folder
    Code:
    C:\
    32788R~1 Jan 22 2010 "32788R22FWJFW"
    32788R~1.TMP Jan 21 2010 "32788R22FWJFW.0.tmp"
    32788R~2.TMP Jan 21 2010 "32788R22FWJFW.1.tmp"
    32788R~3.TMP Jan 21 2010 "32788R22FWJFW.2.tmp"
    32788R~4.TMP Jan 21 2010 "32788R22FWJFW.3.tmp"
    32908B~1.TMP Jan 22 2010 "32788R22FWJFW.6.tmp"
    32948B~1.TMP Jan 22 2010 "32788R22FWJFW.7.tmp"
    32987B~1.TMP Jan 21 2010 "32788R22FWJFW.4.tmp"
    32988B~1.TMP Jan 22 2010 "32788R22FWJFW.8.tmp"
    329C7B~1.TMP Jan 21 2010 "32788R22FWJFW.5.tmp"
    329C8B~1.TMP Jan 22 2010 "32788R22FWJFW.9.tmp"
    32D319~1.TMP Jan 22 2010 "32788R22FWJFW.10.tmp"

Also delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Ella\Local Settings\Temp

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Chaslang, first I would like to thank you for your help. I followed your instructions and my browser does seem to be working correctly. I am still unable to access system restore.

I was unable to delete the Combofix folders. I got the error message "Cannot delete hidec.exe: Acess is denied". I was also unable to delete the files and subfolders in Temp and Documents and Settings. I continued with the instructions. The logs are attached.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\avenger.txt

I followed all of the steps you outlined. I did receive a success message when I added to the registry. I have attached the Avenger.txt log.

There was a typo in my last message that cause it to cut off some of my text. The below is what should have been there:

So please attach the new MGlogs.zip file. Also tell me how things are working. Any change to System Restore?

My computer is running a whole lot faster. I am not having any problems with web pages or searches. I was able to turn on the system restore. I am attaching the MGlog. I was unable to attach the avenger log this time.

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
