Hello and thanks for reading. My fathers PC looks to be infected with a browser redirect of some sort. This occurs when you click on links within Internet Explorer. This takes place no matter what search engine is used.

He is using Windows XP SP3 with Internet Explorer 8. All OS patches are up to date.

What exactly happens and does this only occur with Internet Explorer?

The same thing happens in Chrome. One example of what is happeneing is I will do a seach for "Chrome" in IE8. Clicking on the official sponsored link or another google support link will forward me to a page that has nothing to do with the intended search or another search page all together. I briefly see a "click.livesearchnow.com" page before it forwards me the fake results page.

    What are these files?

    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\adsldp8.dll
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\AK083E209605E394C.lie

    Delete these files:
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\IS3Base5.dll
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\IS3DBA5.dll
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\IS3Hks5.dll
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\IS3HTUI5.dll
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\IS3Inet5.dll
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\IS3Svc5.dll
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\IS3UI5.dll
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\IS3Win325.dll
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\IS3XDat5.dll

Run this and attach the results.

    Using ESET's Online Scanner

I do not know what these files are:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\adsldp8.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\AK083E209605E394C.lie

Delete them then. Then tell me if you still have redirection.

I was able to delete the following file:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\AK083E209605E394C.lie

However, it will not let me delete:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\adsldp8.dll

I tried deleting under Safe mode and it was still locked. I tried using fileassassin from malwarebytes and it could not delete the file under regular logon or Safemode.

What is interesting is if I go under the default administrator account the file doesn't exist.

    The redirects still continue.

    Download and run OTM.

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    • Right-click OTM.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run it.
    • Paste the following code under the [IMG] area. Do not include the word Code.

    Code:
    :Files
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\adsldp8.dll

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large [IMG] button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and attach the contents of that document back here in your next post.

[IMG] Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Please save the work in your browsers before proceeding.
    • Double-click JRT.exe to run (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Please attach JRT.txt to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Still getting redirects. The first two searches seemed to work just fine. However, on the third search the redirect returned. This thing is nasty, nasty, nasty!

    Download OTL to your desktop.

    • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
    • Vista and Windows 7 users Right-click OTL and choose Run as Administrator)
    • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
    • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
    • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Attach both of these logs into your next reply.

We need to run an OTL Fix

    • Right-click OTL.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
    • Copy and Paste the following code into the textbox. Do not include the word Code
    Code:
    Code:
    :otl
    IE - HKCU\..\SearchScopes\{88FB16D2-04EA-4ffe-8079-CFF68F1B9CE6}: "URL" = http://www.search-results.com/web?q={searchTerms}&o=15868&l=dis&prt=BDIE&chn=retail&geo=US&ver=4.0.0.1606

    [EMPTYTEMP]
    [RESETHOSTS]
    [REBOOT]
    • Then click the Run Fix button at the top.
    • OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot. ATTACH that report in your next reply.

Now run OTL again, just a scan and attach new log. Still having redirects?

I think we are good to go. Multiple searches without the redirect.

I ran OTL again. I have attached the logs just incase.

Thank you so much for assistance with this. It is greatly appreciated.

Sure? Surf around a while and if all is still good you can follow the final steps below:

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 4 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
