    Hi everyone, let me just preface all this by saying I am not a total computer noob but I am by all means not all that tech savvy. I have AVG (free) virus scanner and also had at least one Malware/spyware scanner (SuperAntiVirus and SB S&D) that I used somewhat frequently. Unfortunately around Christmas I realized I must have downloaded something not good by using a legal but still somewhat buggy torrent program which I "fixed" with the help of your forums but then realized there would be browser redirects every so often when I would use Google. I thought about just reformatting but I am using that as last resort at this point.
    Anyway, just around 2 days ago I realize I get reinfected again (this time I had not been downloading anything so I am sure the initial infection opened my computer up for this) with something marginally worse because I believe it went hand in hand with my Facebook account being hacked. So instead of trying to do this by myself, I think I need some help getting this straightened out. I initially ran my adware/spyware programs and deleted or fixed as much as I could so the logs may or may not show all that happened with the initial reinfection.

    Note: I tried more than once but I could not get RootRepeal to run properly and detect hidden files on my computer (it did run and detected drivers though), thus I don't have a log for it. I am only running a 32-bit but it would always lock up my computer even with most startup programs not running.

    Once again after all the scans, most of the initial problems (wallpaper was changed to warning of spyware and had one of those fake antivirus notices) have ceased but I am still getting browser redirects with firefox at certain times and an occasionally a new tab will just pop-up (not like a traditional pop-up ad) which I have to close immediately.

    Anyway, on with the logs.... Any help is appreciated. I have HijackThis if it is needed to further help me. I followed all the steps to get RootRepeal to work or so I think, but if it is needed I might need help to get that to run properly...thanks!

    Hi and welcome. I am currently reviewing your logs and will get back to you with a set of instructions in the next post I make to you.

    1. Before we continue I would like for you to use MSConfig to put the machine back into normal start up mode.

    2. Looking at your MBAM log I see "took no action" for the below file. Did you indeed fix it after attaching the log? If not rescan after updating it and fix what it finds. Attach the log.

    3. Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    piybsh
    xdynm

    File::
    c:\documents and settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\prvlcl.dat
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\en-US\SET4E.tmp

    Registry::
    [HKEY_USERS\.default\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer]
    "NoSetActiveDesktop"=-

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      [IMG]

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    4. -
    • Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter ( the quotes are required).
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l C:\TDSSKiller.txt -v

    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive called "TDSSKiller.txt" please attach this log to your next reply.

    5. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix. and also the log from TDSSKiller.

    6. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    OK, I have attached all the log files. The Malwarebytes program had fixed the previous problem file it found but when scanned again on full scan mode it found 2 other things which were quarantined and deleted (as you can see). Everything seemed to run OK-- I don't think the TDSSKiller even found anything which I guess is good, but I am hoping it ran as it was supposed to...it seemed to run very fast.

    So far (for one day at least) things have been going OK, no redirects or anything fishy, I just want to be sure nothing happens again and I am going to find a better anti-virus and some sort of firewall, I suppose.
    Thanks for your help! :)

    Use Windows Explorer to locate and delete the below bold file:
    Also delete all files in the below bold folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
