Can I run onboard and PCI soundcards on one machine?

I have onboard sound at the moment.

I would like to be able to run something like a SB Live as well.

I have issues with one particular programme that really doesn't seem to like the onboard. With the onboard I get the ability to plug into the front of the tower as well as the back.

Is it possible to have a choice between the 2?

    Spare PCI slots.
