Can I run two ATI FirePro 2460 Video Cards using PCIe 1 To PCIe 16 Converter ?

Last year AMD came out with ATI FirePro 2460 Multi View, a low profile card for Stock traders. It supports 4 Monitors.

I want to use two of them for an 8 Monitor ( 1920x1200 Dell U2412M ) setup for stock trading.

I have only one PCIe x 16 slot & there is one PCIe x 1 slot emtpy.

Can I use PCIe x 1 to PCIe x 16 converter to plug in second Card & get 8 displays ?

Would my system support it ?

What are the downsides of doing this ?

If this works, I want to add a 3rd card in another PCIe x 1 slot for a 12 Monitor display. Would that be crazy ?


Following are specs of my System.


Dell XPS 8300

One PCIe 16 slot ( It has GeForce GT 530 that I cann throw away )

3 PCIe 1 slots ( One is Free ) ( Other 2 have sound card & TV Tuner Card & I can throw them away too if those slots are needed )

460 Watt Power Supply

i7-2600 Processor (3.4GHz, 8MB Cache)

Chipset Intel® H67

8GB (4X2GB) DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz Memory

NVIDIA GeForce GT530 - 1GB GDDR3 (VGA/HDMI/DVI)

Windows - 7 Ultimate ( 64 bit )

Your second link is broken.

I dont see how you could convert it because I would think that you wont physically fit the card in as it will then sit too high.

Secondly, your PSU wont handle two cards, let alone three.

Also it is a desktop with enough height so I think it should fit.

 

Ah ok I see... So you have a full size desktop but you are fitting a low profile GPU. I though you had a low profile Case. Which would mean that when you fit the adapter the card would stand proud.

I have never tried it but I guess in principle it would work but your PSU is still not powerfull enough

 

I have ordered the x1 to x16 adapter. Taking a gamble & if it doesn't work, will get a new PC. If it does then will get a new PSU.
