I have a following problem: when I try to connect to www.orkut.com or www.rate.ee, (also a similar site as orkut only in my language), then the browser gives following error:

    Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.orkut.com.

    * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
    moments.
    * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
    connection.
    * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

I cant understand what the problem is. I have tryed to go to these sites with iexplorer, and also with firefox. Same thing happens and the browser states that it could be a web problem. The thing is that i can connect to ALL other sites, i seem not to have any other restrictions, or atleast i have not found any other sites i cn not connect to. I have an administrator account btw and i also cannot ping these sites. what could i possibly do to resolve this problem?
    Thank you! :)

edit: intitally replied without reading the whole post, sorry.

OK, I would start by going to start and run, and typing "cmd" (no quotes). In the black window that opens, type "netsh winsock reset" (no quotes), and press enter. The computer should say "successfully reset the winsock catalogue...". Reboot and test.

If this does not work, restart, tap F8, and choose "safe mode with networking". Depending on your hardware configuration, you may not be able to get online in this state, but if you can, see if you have the same problem on the website.

    Any routers in the equation?

Let us know how it goes!

    Nop, no and no
I mean I have no router, just a modem on the desk one connection to the socket and other to comp.
The restock thingy(just out of curiosity, what does it do btw) did absolutely nothing I can recognize.
And it does not even work in safe mode.

    Thanks!

OK, maybe Powercycle the modem (power down or unplug both the modem and the computer for a while, like say 5-7 minutes, then turn them both back on and see if it works).

I would also rename the host files. Basically rename anything at c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc except for networks, protocol, services.

Oh, and the winsock reset changed a couple of registry keys that affect how the internet work to default settings. If they weren't broken, nothing obivous should change. :)

Hope those steps help. My money is on the powercycle.

Open the command prompt again (start->run, cmd, enter) and enter 'nslookup www.orkut.com' (no quotes) to see if it resolves correctly. Post the output of the command here.
    Also, try disabling your firewall.

I tried that and it gave me this answer:
    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name:www.orkut.com
    Addresses: 72.14.209.85, 72.14.209.86, 72.14.209.87

    and thank you.

See if you can access the site if you type the IP address (one of the three in the nslookup result) in the address bar. Make sure the firewall is turned off. Also try to turn off any other anti-spyware, popup- and ad-blockers.
Note: this is only for testing, you should never turn off the firewall when surfing the net.

Then these sites are probably blocked by your ISP and you will not be able to access them, unless you use a proxy.

but you know whats the weirdest thing? i cant even access these sites with a proxy, (tntproxy), I mean, yes I can go to www.rate.ee with tntproxy, but to www.orkut.com I can not go even with the proxy.

and you know what happened today? I just wanted to try to go to these addresses and typed in www.orkut.com and it just went without any problem to this page. I can not understand what was the problem, because I havent changed anything lately. It`s weird that like one day I can connect and on the other day I cant any more ..? but right now I can and I am happy about of that:D
and thank you all for your help anyway! :)
