    Hi

Please help! I've just had an old computer re formatted and updated to use for basic things at my work. The only problem I have is that it will only run in 16 colours now. I assume I need to install a video driver/ graphics driver. The problem is I'm not sure which one I need to download from the internet and install. Can anyone tell me how to find out which driver I need to install.

    Please Help :cry

Welcome to MajorGeeks! You need to find out who made your motherboard if it is onboard video who made the video card and go to their website and find the driver.

Might tell you who made the board.

Look on the board/card for any names, numbers.

In the Device Manager under monitor it says ATI VGA Wonder. Don't know if that's of any help. Sorry I'm not the most computer minded person.

If you go back into device manager

    and click the +
    next to display adapters

    the card details will show
    just right click on that
    and select "update driver"

    if that does not work
please post the full name of the graphics card (from the above)
as well as your operating system
and we can direct you to the correct driver

    or

    goto

Just done that and all it say is ATI VGA Wonder

It's am old computer and is only running windows 98. It's not connected to the internet because we don't need it to be.

So what other info do you need and how do I get it.

    Plaphon and shanemail,

If you bothered to look carefully at the ATI site, you'd see the the VGA wonder drivers are no longer hosted there, and the Catalyst suite has no support for the VGA wonder.

    Please check before giving advice.

if catalyst crashed your computer tou may need more ram to run it, or you may have downloaded the version for XP or Vista by mistake.... however i don't know if that would make a difference.

It would certainly make a difference. Drivers are O/S (Operating System) specific.

Download, install, and run Everest Home Edition on this machine. (Clean FreeWare) Once it's finished loading and running, look under

Computer, Summary, Display, or under Display, PCI/AGP Video. This will tell you what display adapter/chip you have. Post that information. (Video Adapter and 3D Accelerator.)

what are you talking about? There are plenty of wonder version drivers for ATI cards for almost every version of vindows, even there are some for vista.

    look here.

    Don't despair, Emma
It will probably take sevaral goes to get the right driver. ATI make (made) some pretty good hardware but their software side has always been wobbly.
As a result they seem to be forever updating and changing their software and posting different versions on different websites. I note that shanemail's link is to the GERMAN ATI site for instance.

From the era you must be talking about the ATI drivers were notorious for crashing Win 98 and ATI used to put out a new CD every few months, I have several.

Now for the good news, If you start an ATI driver install and it is the wrong one the install will tell you and abort. I used to simply run through each one till I found one that fitted as the easy way. not scientific I know but it worked.

As the guys said, see what extra information you can get about the card from device manager and we will see what can be done about the driver.

Try device manager first, everest is almost unreadable in 16 colour.

You need to identify the ATI chip in use in order to ascertain the correct driver package. Everest will do this for you. Device Manager will simply state "ATI VGA Wonder", as already stated in post #5.
