    Hi,

I'm having network problems and am trying to suss out an solution.

One issue, my network laptops (wireless) will not share folders/files with the network pc's (wired).

I notice that I can ping all the computers using the IP but not the name. So 192.168.1.5 is fine but "ping laptopname" results in a "could not find host" message. Is this is clue?

Beating my head against the wall with this one.

    ipconfig /all

    Welcome to Majorgeeks forums :)

Look at the bottom line, NetBIOS disabled, change it to Enabled and test again.

How to enable NetBios is it another install on the tcip/ip properties?

  4. satrow

    satrow Major Geek Extraordinaire

It's within the advanced section of the TCP/IP properties for the network adapter, under the WINS tab :)

    Thanks very much...

OK, I enabled NetBios but ipconfig /all still reports NetBios disabled....?

Hmm, gimme time to think about this - what output do you get from using the net view command from a cmd window?

Same command from one of the other PC's?

Which OS's are on the networked PC's?

    what a mess!

    fyi: 4 pc's, 1 lap, 1 NetStorage currently connected to a NetGear wireless/wired router:

from the PC1 - Net View gets all the named computers except PC2(xp)
    ----------------------------------------------
    \\AVAPCHP
    \\EFQUAD efmain
    \\ERIKLAP Eriks Vista Laptop
    \\LYNNOFFICE Lynn Off
    \\MYBOOKWORLD MyBookWorld
    The command completed successfully.

    from the Vista Lap:
"The network path was not found"

    from PC2:
"The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available"

All XP except for vista laptop and one wireless pc that is not a problem running vista 64-bit.

Is the Vista laptop set to see your network as public (high security, limited file-sharing) or private (lower security, greater ability to share folders)?

    Progress!

I made sure it was Private on the laptop.

I'm not sure why but "net view" is suddenly working on the lap. I get the full list except for PC2 which seems to be now the lone holdout...?

I can now access PC1 shared files from the lap, but cannot access the laptop shared folders/files from PC1

Firewall is off on laptop (windows firewall).

PC2 is just out on its own..not sure what's up here.

Got LLTD on the XP machines...was hoping that was my silver bullet, but no dice.

NetBui? will research..that's another TCI/IP properties install?

It's an older, non-routable protocol. Not officially supported by MS since Windows 2000 (it is available to install from the XP CD) but some people still use it successfully in mixed networks up to Vista.
