Cannot dwnld AVG free

Everytime I try to download AVG Free Edition for antivirus help it says ..."CRC failed in files.dat".
I would really like to download this .. I have McAfee and when I tried to download that something happened and on it keeps saying that my computer is not protected.
All I want to do is have a wonderful antivirus thing happening here and I really don't care if I ever see McAfee ever again...
Sooooo All you geeks that I've known to look up to so much....what Do I do?
I have downloaded service pack 2....because somewhere (?) I read that it would be easier to get my pictures ...to do something...now I don't even know what....help please...
