I am on Windows Vista Ultimate, and my quick launch bar is gone. When I right click the taskbar; go to toolbars; and click quick launch; nothing happens. Also when I right click a program, and click "add to quick launch," nothing happens. When i right click the taskbar; click properties; and click "show quick launch," nothing happens. There is a quick launch folder in the C:/user/appdata/roaming/microsoft/internet explorer folder, and there are programs in it. I've tried restarting my computer and i still can't figure this out.

What did you do before quick launch had disappered?

I know several things for Win Xp, maybe they will help in Vista.

At first look for these folders:
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch (if there is no such folder, then create it)
and there is must be a file Desktop.htt in
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

If previous advise doesn't help then try this:
    Start/run/regedit
    search for
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\GrpConv\MapGroups
create string Quick Launch and appropriate
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
Also It can be necessary to do the same with
    HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\GrpConv\MapGroups

    And the last instruction is:
Right click on the taskbar/Toolbars/New Toolbar
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Good Luck, post back the results, please!

ok, there is a quick launch folder in that directory with the program shortcuts in it. the desktop.htt isn't there, so how do i create it?

in the regedit, there is no folder called GrpConv that i can find in that path

and when i create a new toolbar, it just shows the word quick launch on the right side of the taskbar instead of the left and you have to click on it in order to show the shortcuts

Copy it from another user account or take it from another pc (it may be need to change the way to background pics).

    *shrug*

I dont have any of those folders where you say they are. Mine are under Documents and Settings\user name\Application Data

    yada, yada.

    Same with desktop.htt.

Which means its all account specific on my machine. Making a new account builds a new desktop.htt along with quick launch folder, etc.

    Try the steps below.

Click Start > Run and type REGSVR32 /i SHELL32.DLL then click Enter

Click Start > Run and type REGSVR32 /i BROWSEUI.DLL then click Enter

Restart windows and enable quick launch.

well i only have one user on my machine so i wont be able to take it from any other account.

when i do both of those, windows just tells me that it cannot find the file

Be sure you typed it correctly, there are a couple of spaces there. Just copy and paste it.

ok the first one loaded fine, but the second one gives me this error message:

"The module browseUI.dll was loaded, but the entry point DLLRegisterServer was not found

Make sure that BROWSEUI.dll is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again

Disable your anti-virus and run it again.

OK. I'm on xp right now but can test the BROWSEUI command this evening, might not be the same with Vista.

I'm trying to think of another avenue here ;) I'll get back, maybe some other ideas will be posted.

When you try the right-click > properties > taskbar > then choose (check) Show Quick Launch, nothing happens. What do you mean "nothing happens"?

    Try this if possible:

If it is already checked, uncheck it. Click apply.

Then recheck the QL box. Click apply. Try QL again.

Well in truth, I feel like you ignored me. I specifically mentioned that making a new account rebuilds a lot of the files/settings that could break quick launch. A month later, I still don't see where you tried it.

    Still.

    Hi,
I'm having this "quick launch problem" too. When I run the shell32.dll it succeeds, but the browseui.dll fails with return code 0x80070003.

I can check quick launch from toolbar and taskbar properties and it loads on the taskbar, but then it does not load when I reboot.

    Quite annoying.:cry

    Any suggestions?:confused
