Cannot Startup After System Restore

Running Windows 98....I think I filled my tiny b12GB Harddrive. My entire system locked up, so I used the handy little multi-cd QuickRestore discs that Compaq gave me with my system. However, even after this I cannot start up. I cannot even start up in safe mode or command prompt only mode either. Here are the messages I have been getting:

A) Insufficient memory to initialize windows. Quit one or more memory resident programs or remove uneccessary utilities from your config.sys and autoexe.bat files and restart your computer.

B) Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.

What happened? How do I fix it? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

 

How much Memory (ram) do you have installed, have you added any since you got the computer?

Steve...thanks, but not the issue here. Only have 192 MB of RAM....any other leads?

 

Try....removing one of your sticks of ram, and try to boot up again. If it fails, still, replace the ram, and remove the other, then try again.

 

I concur... sounds like a sketchy (flakey) RAM stick. Win98 will run with as little as 32mb RAM (very slowly, but it will run!). Just keep swapping out RAM stix 'til everything is copasetic (sp?) again. BE SURE to unplug the PC's power cord every time you swap out a RAM stick! If it turns out to not be the RAM, you may have a faulty sound card or modem. I've witnessed this behavior with bad cards of all types....
