Following advice on this forum I got rid of Microsoft's java and downloaded and installed Sun's java. I don't know if I need to tweak it to get it to work but noticed a problem on a web site I frequently use. The web site is the International Species Information System (http://www.isis.org). On the left hand side of the site's homepage there should be a menu. I know the menu uses javascript. Since changing to Sun's java the menu will not load when I visit the site.

Just so you know javascript and java are completely diffrent things. Although in this case the menu appears to be java.

As for the actual issue's you're having I'm not quite sure what to say. Suns java isn't as widely supported as MS's java VM. Once SUN refused to allow MS to continue supporting their VM some companies started to adjust their applets to work with suns version, but the fact is not everyone has done so just yet. So some sites simply won't work correctly unless you have the MS JVM. Although usally the compatibilty errors are minor and you at least get some functionality.

Are you sure you're running the newest version of sun's VM? Which browser are you using? Are you certain you've enabled it (in IE's it's under tools>internet options>advanced)

I think I must be running the newest version of Sun's Java because I only downloaded it earlier this week. My browser is IE6. I have enabled it. Still have the problem and am at a loss as to what to do.

The site used to load fine for me until this week when I switched from Microsoft's Java to Sun's Java.

UPDATE: I carried out manual uninstall of Microsoft Java to make sure I completely got rid of it. Then I uninstalled Sun Java. I then downloaded Sun Java again. I configured it. I now get the menu of the web site I was having problems with (http://www.isis.org/). Now I have the menu absolutely nothing happnes when I click on any menu item.

Anyone got any ideas what the problem is and a solution.

Help please I do use this site a lot.

The problem you are experiencing has more to do with Internet Explorer's security rather than Sun Java itself.

The easiest two solutions are to either add the site to your "trusted sites" list, or use an "s" after the http to make it a "secure site" and allow the link to load.

For example, don't use http://www.isis.org/ , but instead use https://www.isis.org/ and it will load.

This applies to just about any site you experience a problem with.
