    Hello troopers,

I believe my laptop is ravaged by "ware," all kind of ware. So I found your site through Gizmo's link and believe that I've been directed to the right place for quality help. I tried Geek Squad, however they are extremely pricey and fed me a load of garble about their technology is hi-tech and would run at least a $1000 if it were commercialized....something didn't wash....thank God for Major Geeks...but I digress! I found your informative thread R&RMF, and I was eager to get it started.

However, I got to disable MSconfig and a message claiming Windows couldn't find it and that I should make sure the name was correct and try again. Also, to search for the file, I should click the start button and click search. I relatively new to the technical realm of computer and not sure what's going on. Also, my CPU runs at a 100% for periods of time and starts up with 33 processes...is that bad? This is all secondary to the R&RMF issues I am having; it would be most appreciated if you could bring me to freedom....thanx a million!!!!

    Thomas

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Just continue on. Refer to the tips and noties in the below.

    ====================

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

    Your logs are all clean.

What malware problems are you actually having?

First of all, chaslang I would like to thank you very much for your time and assistance...I truly appreciate it greatly! The computer was running extremely slow and would often stop when transitioning from one page or window to the next. Also, it would peel information of the screen when completed (i.e. closing out a window would look like it was being peeled off and take for ever to boot up or shut down. Not to mention, some of my plugins started to be either void of use or all together missing...I have but a finite grasp of malware and thought it may be an infection of some sorts, especially since the antispyware2009 was scanned on my computer. I just wanted to be sure that it was either infected or clean.

I called Geek Squad and describe the current situation & performance of the computer and they said it sounded like it was a virus and most likely the 2009 strand, without me even mentioning one word of it to them...so I guess I believed it to be so. Please accept my earnest apology if this false alarm, and ultimately my lack of knowledge, led to wasting away valuable time from a more serious & real case of malware infection.:-o

    Thank you kindly,

    God Bless!

    You're welcome.

This is more likely due to what you are running and also due to the fact that you should have double the amount of memory that you have to properly run Windows XP. Your logs showed only 512 MB and only 146 MB was free. Doubling to 1 GB will help.

By what program? Your logs show no signs of this and they definitely would have if you were infected.

Not possible based on your logs unless you cleaned it before you came here.

One other thing to look at for your speed problems is the use of Comodo Internet Security which just may be too much for your PCs speed and limited RAM to use. Hopefully you do not have an antivirus as part of this Comodo package because you already have Avira AntiVir antivirus installed.

True, very true. I'm about to remedy that problem very soon...I'm thinking going up to 4 gigs, if that's possible!?!

I know that the Antispyware2009 appeared in an uncloseable window (after my cousin surfed some Chris Brown link??) and started to scan the the computer telling me there was 29 high alert risks of malware on it and would not let me close until it was downloaded, so I did. But, I figured something was peculiar when everything transpired, so I immediately called Geek Squad and told them of my PC's problematic=like symptoms, only I didn't mention anything at all to them about the Antisptware2009 bid; they mentioned it as well after I told them everything...so I thought that should confirm it for me--glad to be wrong though!

This is all after I scanned the setup icon with Avira, SAS & MBAM; I did this immediately upon it's downloading onto the computer...maybe it removed it before serious damage could happen; although the computer appeared to be running very strangely.

No, I just have the firewall I believe. I downloaded it from Gizmo's and it stated firewall only, I was made aware that you can only have one virus scanner and one firewall. That was great insight because was on the verge of installing everything while my ZoneAlarm suite was still active...talk about a headache!:banghead

Once more chaslang, I want to extend my sincerest gratitude to you for all your time and effort in securing my PC; likewise, to your staff and service as well...it is truly appreciated and definitely needed!!!

    Thanks

Depends on your motherboard and Windows version.

With such a small amount of RAM, running Comodo may still be an issue as it can be too much for some PCs.

    You're welcome.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
