    Evening

    I have been given a PC that wouldn't connect to the internet. It had online security 2009 on it. I have followed the sticky (XP removal guide) and managed to remove the program and a whole host of malware and a couple of viruses. The PC now "seems" to be OK. connects to the internet fine and seems fast enough. However I cannot connect to any anti-virus or spyware pages or update any of the progs (fortunately I did transferred all the latest databases/rules onto a disk with the programs before I started).

    Anything spyware related throws up a oops! link appears to be broken. DNS error (google toolbar)

    I am assuming from this either I haven't removed everything or I need to reset something but I am at a loss. Anyone any ideas? I can post all the necc. logs if needed.

    Thanks

    If you followed the Read and Run First Malware removal guide, you would know to attach these logs:
    SAS
    MBAM
    RootRepeal
    ComboFix
    C:\MGLogs.zip

    sorry I did read it, just naively thought the answer was going to be "oh you just need to reset..."

    root repeal wont run on the laptop.

    thanks

    First thing you need to do is not to allow all users to have admin privileges! You need to run SAS and MBAM on each of the user account and reset all but one. ( Or at least only you and your wife).

    Someone has used a keygen/crack for something. Let me ask you where you downloaded PCTools AV from?

    Now, please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    W32System

    NetSvc::
    W32System

    File::
    c:\windows\123312sd345fdg.dat
    c:\windows\system32\aeqgqpy.dll
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\11158754

    RegLockDel::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Classes\CLSID\{286D4131-3821-6CBF-08770360589374C2}\{48BEB065-0DEC-1314-6E019AD5B66531AE}\{E2D4EA90-E228-BF00-D20DE2AD05099BA2}*]
    "T5Z13ZW2JKQWLSY1EUWJ2RCRNB1"=hex:01,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,5c,63,e8,cf,f7,e6,fd,
       3a

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Classes\CLSID\{33455A87-EC18-3D7A-3D7249C0BA41BFCD}\{E1E7777D-A2E0-3590-68879D33FAB4B890}\{0DF25B16-A097-561D-C33793AF098BCDB4}*]
    "T5Z13ZW2JKQWLSY1EUWJ2RCRNB1"=hex:01,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,5c,63,e8,cf,f7,e6,fd,
       3a

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Services\W32System]

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    [IMG]
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thanks for the help. It isn't my computer but I will pass the admin comments on. The PC tools I installed after the laptop was given to me to fix. It was from the PCTools homepage. No Keygen/crack used once it was given to me so I assume that along with the "online security 2009" was the source of the issue.

    attached is the logs. Hopefully it is clean now. It seems to connect to the pages I have tested and is telling me updates are to be downloaded which it wasnt doing.

    Thanks for the help, if you are ever in Widnes, Dave owes you a pint.
