   We're using Windows XP SP3.......Prior to noticing the process 5lwer687.exe, my roommate was downloading something he shouldn't have been and ended up with a9installer.exe on his desktop.

   Hi. a9installer.exe is malware.
   
   Malware generally installs dlls and exe's with random strings of numbers/letters. A good indication that you have malware is when you go to do a search on it and you don't get any hits.
   
   I would recommend he perform all steps in the READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide and post the requested logs (How to attach logs) in a New thread in the Malware Removal Forum.
