Can't Get Download Speed Above 50/kbps

I have a great cable based internet connection. As a matter of fact, just a few minutes ago I did a speed test and received 50 down and 5 up. Downloading anything from the internet usually works great with lightning fast results.

However, I've been trying to download several MPG files from a server via an FTP client. I've tried both FlashFXP and Filezilla. For some reason, it caps at around 50/kbps. Each file is about 900mb so it estimates it will take several hours when in-fact it should take just minutes.

I've called by my internet service provider and Blue Host (which is the company who operates the server) and neither can provide a solution. To rule out any FTP config problems blocking me, I even tried creating a link that points directly to the path of the folder where the video file is located. Then tried to "SAVE TARGET AS" to my HDD in Internet Explorer. I still get the horribly slow speeds even when bypassing FTP.

Anyone know of anything that might be getting missed here? Being unable to pull these video files from the server is holding up a major project I'm working on.

Just because your connection supports 50 meg, doesnt mean the pipe out of the place your downloading from does, and the supporting connections in between may not either.

 

Exactly, especially for ftp. which means you are downloading directly from another source, which could be someone else's PC. Your max download would be only as great as their (your source's) max upload.
