Can't get started on your first steps - logon fails

I am a little late seeking help! PC running xp clearly infected, and would not start in safe mode. I tried the F-secure recovery disc which renames infected files.
This found the winlogon86 infection amongst others, and left the PC unable to logon - it accepts the logon click, shows loading settings, but then logs off automatically.
Can you help me get past this problem so that I can start the malware removal as per your instructions?
