Can't play dvd on my computer

Hello all,

My computer (Windows XP Pro, SP3) has a DVD player, so...

I went to the library and checked out a few cooking show DVDs. Well, RealPlayer, Windows Media and Winamp don't recognize them—I think it was Windows Media Player that said I needed an MPEG-2 decoder.

Checking the DVDs (there are two), one DVDs has a folder for video that has BUP, IFO and VOB files; the other folder is an an audio folder and has no files in it.

The other DVD doesn't show a thing on it (using Windows Explorer). I mean, nothing, yet it plays just fine on the TV DVD player. I've unhidden files and all, but there's nothing there.

I ran a program off Microsoft's site that checks for decoders...my system, apparently, has none. That's when I downloaded WinAmp 5 (off this site) because I thought that it also handled MPEG-2.

Any ideas as to what to do?

CORRECTION!

The message Windows Media Player gives is I don't have a compatible DVD decoder installed. So I don't know if it's an MPEG-2 issue or not.

 

Download klite codec pack from filehippo.com, it may even be on major geeks site. That should fix your problem.

 

You can download and install VLC. It has all the codecs and plays things that other players don't seem to be able to play. I have it installed in addition to Windows Media Player.

I had the exact same difficulties playing DVDs last winter, and VLC with codecs solved it nicely.
