    Hello,
This is my first time submitting to MajorGeeks and I hope you can help. I have porn sites listed in my favorites that will not go away. I have run Adaware, Spybot and Stinger many times to no avail. I go into Explorer and delete them and empty my recycle bin and still they return the next day. This has been going on for a few months.

I have read threads saying to run Hijack this and I have run it but I am not sure which items I can delete. I was wondering if you could tell me which ones I should delete. AFter looking at the log nothing looks like an obvious unwanted item:rolleyes: . I have not attached my log per your sites request.

MY system is running Windows XP

I have also downloaded CC cleaner and plan to run that after I submit this message.
Thanks Any help you can give is appreciated

    Welcome to Majorgeeks :)

Just to rule out any Malware infestation please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
    • Bitdefender
    • Panda Scan
    • HijackThis
    .

follow the steps above then post again with your logs for the malware guys to go through.

    Hi there,

This is in response to assistance from Halo. Thank you very much Halo but unfortunately my unwanted favorites are still around. I ran through all of the scans recommended in the Sticky Thread: Read and Run me First Before Asking for support except the Microsoft Windows Defender. All ran well I think. I also ran Bitdefender and Panda. Hoping that those scans would have done the trick I checked my favorites in internet explorer the next day but to no avail. So I ran Hijack this today, 3 days after running all of the others. I hope you can help. I have attached my scans Bitdefender, Panda and Hijack this.

You must go back to step 7 of the READ ME and follow the directions for installing HijackThis as requested. You are running it exactly how we specify not to run.

    C:\DOCUME~1\CHRIS2~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 2 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe

That is directly from the ZIP file and this is not a safe thing to do. Extract it from the ZIP file and put it into the folder we requeste in step 7.

Did you install CounterSpy because you could not run Windows Defender? If so, please attach the log that was requested in the READ ME.

After you do the above continue on with the below!

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://webcoolsearch.com/
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://webcoolsearch.com/
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://webcoolsearch.com/
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - (no file)
    O9 - Extra button: AOL Toolbar - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - (no file)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: AOL Toolbar - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - (no file)
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: msconfd.dll

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\Program Files\nrpn <--- the whole folder
    c:\program files\common files\Dpi <--- the whole folder (or file)
C:\Documents and Settings\Chris 2\Favorites\!!! Exclusive Youngest Porn !!!.url
C:\Documents and Settings\Chris 2\My Documents\Data\all_files4.exe <--- in fact delete the whole Data folder unless you need stuff in it. It seems to be full of malware
    c:\windows\sepsd.bin
    C:\windows\system32\msconfd.dll

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST).

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

    Hi there,

I followed your instructions and I still have the unwanted favorites. I apologize for not running HJT correctly the first time but I followed the instructions correctly and I think I'm all set. I have attached the updated HJT scan along with the Counter Spy scan. Counter Spy was run because I could not run Windows Defender.

I was able to "fix" the requested items in Hijack This. I booted into safe mode and was able to delete all of the files except two. I could not find

    c:\program files\common files\Dpi

I followed your instrucitons for not being able to delete but I was still unable to delete

    C:\windows\system32\msconfd.dll

Let me know if you can help:)

You did not fix any of the items I asked you to fix. They are all still there. You must exit ALL browsers before clicking Fix checked. Also it would be a good idea to shut down AOL antispyware and Counter Spy before fixing. They could block the fixes.

BIGGER problem, you ran a scan with CounterSpy and you told it to ignore all the BAD stuff it found. Run it again and this time let it fixing everything.

If you have Kazaa and/or P2P Networking installed, UNINSTALL them.

Then attach a new HJT log and a new CounterSpy log.
