    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and then attach the requested logs to your next reply when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.
    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
    * Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated - our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Hi

I have run the cleaning procedure to the end of step 3 but it has not resolved the problem.
Superantispyware or malwarebytes reported no malicous infections.
I didn't run Combofix or RootRepeal because the o/s is 64bit.
I still can access the internet when in safemode but not in normal mode.
I have 3 log files attached

    Hello, johngc

Let's run some additional scans, as I see nothing blatant in your logs.

    Step 1:
Delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

    Step 2:
Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!

Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.4.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.

    • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
    • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
    • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
    • Click the Start Scan button.
    • Do not use the computer during the scan
    • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
    • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
    • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
    • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_14.17.05_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory ( usually Local Disk C ).
    • Attach this log to your next message

    Step 3:
Now download Sophos Anti-Rootkit 1.5 and save to a location you will be able to find such as your desktop
    1. Run sar_15_sfx by double clicking on it.
    2. Click Accept to agree to the EULA
    3. Click Install (if you wish to change the default installation location do so here but remember where you install to, the default is C:\SOPHTEMP)
    4. Once it finishes copying files, exit the installer

    Running the scan
    1. Navigate to the location that you installed the software to (Default: C:\SOPHTEMP)
    2. Run the sargui Application by double clicking on it. (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    3. Ensure that all three of the options are checked
    4. Click Start Scan
    5. Once the scan is complete, close Sophos Anti-Rootkit by closing the scan window and clicking Exit in the main window

*Do NOT click 'Clean up checked items' or attempt to have Sophos Anti-Rookit fix anything unless specifically instructed to.

    Finding the logs
    1. Click on Start --> Run
    2. Type in %TEMP%\sarscan.log and press enter
    3. The log file will open in the default editor (probably Notepad)
    4. Click File --> Save As and save the file to your desktop or other location for easy retrieval.

    Step 4:
Please download OTL by OldTimer, saving it to your desktop:
    • Close all open windows on the Task Bar. Double-click the OTL icon to start the program and let it run uninterrupted.
    • When the windows appears, underneath Output at the top - change it to Minimal Output.
    • Under the Standard Registry box, change it to All.
    • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
    • Now click the Run Scan button at Top left and let the program run - the scan may take 5-10 minutes.
    • Do not TOUCH your keyboard until the scan completes!
      • It will produce two (2) logs on your desktop, one will pop up called OTL.txt and the other - Extras.txt. These logs are saved normally directly under your C:/ directory.
      • Now exit Notepad.
      • Exit OTL by clicking the [X] at top right.

    Step 5:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right-click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the below logs to your next reply:
    • OTListIt.txt
    • Extras.txt
    • sarscan.log
    • new MGLogs.zip

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"

    Hi,

Many thanks for your help so far.

I have completed the 5 steps that you outlined step by step.
I couldn't delete one file in "c:\users\adam k\local setting\temp" FXSAPIDebugLogFile.txt as it said it was in use by another program.

I still have the same problem, can't access internet in normal mode but can in safe mode and norton Anti virus not working.

I can ping sites (eg www.google.com, etc) from the command line in normal mode and get a correct response, but can't access www.google.com from within Internet explorer.

I have attached the required files as requested.

    You're welcome.

This appears to be a software issue as I still see no malware infection in your logs.

I noticed that you don't have any other browsers installed. You should try using a couple of others suggested here to determine if Internet Explorer needs to be re-installed. ( After first exporting your bookmarks )

    * Other than doing the following -

    (1) Deleting these folders:

    C:\ProgramData\Alwil Software
    C:\ProgramData\WildTangent
    C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy

    (2) Uninstalling Java(TM) 6 Update 14 and updating to the latest Sun Java Runtime Environment

    - I'll give you the final cleanup instructions and suggest that you create a new thread in our SoftwareForum for further help.

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and re-enable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have re-enabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to Add/Remove programs (Programs and Features if using Vista or Windows 7) and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:
