can't stay connected wireless

I have a Gateway laptop that originally came with Vista. I dumped Vista and loaded XP Pro.

I have a wireless router D-Link that has always worked fine. My computer was setup to run on 3 different wireless networks depending on location.

We moved into a new house and my wife works from home so she needs very high speed access. We now get 5mbps?. The problem though is the wireless. For her two laptops (xp pro HP and Mac) she uses it just fine. On my computer however in order for me to use it I have to go unplug the router and modem and disconnect the cord in between, wait 10 seconds and power it all back up. PITA!

The computer connects to the wireless fine, then it goes through the linking process and obtains the IP, Mac, subnet info. At this point, it starts looking for the wireless network again, finds it, gets the ip info and starts looking for it all over again. Very frustrating.

I adjusted the power settings so it stays on while connected to ac power. Did not help. Tried enabling windows zero config but that didn't help either. Got rid of 2 of the networks thinking maybe if it only looked for 1 it wouldn't get confused, no help.

The modem and the router are working fine as evidenced by my wifes 2 computers. I need to adjust some setting but am at a loss as to where/what it is. It used to work until the new high speed system and once connected now will work until it decides not to.

Ideas? Sledgehammer?

ok so this is only happening on one of your three computers correct.

Where did you get the driver for xp when you downgraded, seems to me the driver might not be 100% correct.

 

Yes it is only happening on the computer that now runs XP Pro (legal copy) vs. Vista.

It had been running fine since the conversion for a couple months at least and on several different wireless networks including the one I use now. Only since we have moved into the house has it changed.

Been thinking about it and don't know the relevance of the following information.

We hooked up my D-link wireless router and all computers worked fine. Then my wife wanted to try her 2-wire wireless router and it did not work at all. We assumed it was because of the much higher speed we are getting now. Back to the D-link and all is good.

My computer sometimes gives me a rapid blue flashing screen of death. Power off and it powers back up and all is good. No other way to restore it.

I got the driver via the manufacturers website.

I am wondering if a). the driver has gotten corrupted and/or b). if the hard drive is starting to go and that is the issue.

Now that I have cycled the modem and wireless router it will work for most/all of the day and kick off sometime this evening. I tried disabling the wireless/lan utility to no avail. Sometimes if I hit the "repair connection" tab it will fix the problem and sometimes not. Mostly not.

Sounds like system issues more then a network issue.

 

Possibly but I don't know enough/anything about system issues. Ideas?

Here with in the first couple of lines, although this seems kinda stupid, you need to upgrade your Service Pack to 3 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/bb794714 this may fix it i am not positive yet but it is a step in the right direction.
