I bought a Cavalry 500 GB esata external harddrive from buy.com which included skimpy instructions for installation that would be comprehended only by an expert. To contact the manufacturer for more complete installation instructions, I Googled "Cavalry HDD," and the only result was uscavalry, which is a website that sells military clothing and the like. When I contacted buy.com about my dilemma, they returned the military website as the manufacturer. All of this, with daily life activities, has consumed over a month of time. Surely installing an external hdd should be simple and straight-forward, I thought (and still think). To complicate matters, there is more than one model of this drive!

Buy.com's website (at that time but not today) included mostly glowing recommendations (and only a few thumbs down). So the drive is popular and that means many people have no doubt got the job done.

My question of course is: can anyone out there who is familiar with the issues lend me a hand? I'm not an expert but I'm not stupid or slow; I am 71 and am self-taught in the basics, and I sure would appreciate the help of a more knowledgeable person.

    Thank you,

there is really nothing to install. when you 1st plug it in to your comp (xp, or vista), it should install drivers to your comp (initial installation), then you can use it. once you have it plugged in it should show up in "my computer" as another drive, you use it like you would use your current hard drive. note - if you have windows 98se, then you are going to have to install the drivers (you can d/l them from the calavary site), before you are able to use your new h/d.

ok, it looks like cavalry is the manufacturer (i thought it was the model name at 1st).

try finding your model# on the external h/d page (link above), click the link of your drive, and at the bottom it says d/l manual (i've noticed not all of them have it). there is also a manuals page (link below).

fyi, when you are going to disconnect the drive, you should double click (or right click) the green arrow by your clock (screenshot below). once it's removed you can unplug it. i'm not sure about external h/d's, but on a thumbdrive, don't ever unplug it while it is writing or reading data (blinking led), as this can mess it up. g/l, sos
