cd drive not reading anything

Hello.
I currently have an IBM thinkpad laptop.
Processor: Intel Pentium M 1300MHz
DVD/CD: Matshita UJDA740 DVD/CD-RW

I haven't had many problems with the dvd/cd drive at all, until recently.
It won't run any type of cd or dvd anymore. I can hear it spinning when I
put a disk in, but nothing is read. In 'My Computer', it remains the default
D: label, instead of reading what's on the disk.

I updated drivers to version 5.1.2535.0, but I'm still having no luck.
Is there a specific reason this would happen all of a sudden?

Side note: I was using Daemon tools to create virtual drives in order to install a game, only to find out my video card was crap and couldn't run it any
way. I removed the virtual drives and Daemon tools, but could this have caused my problem?

Hi and welcome to MajorGeeks.

If it's XP, go to Start, Run and type in Regedit.

Find the following key,

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the right-hand side, delete both the Upper and LowerFilters and reboot.


*Only do this after you have taken the necessary precautions*
