Hi there. I wonder if you can please help me with this?
Under 'my computer', my notebook's combo drive now shows up as 2 separate drives. (I'm running XP SP2 with two partitions C and D)
E: The QSI DVDRW SDW-042 (that I recognise)
    And a
F: SCSIVAX DVD.CD-ROM SCSI CdRom Device
Can anyone explain what's gonig on - or even better - help me fix it?
incidentally, this has happened at the same time as I have (again) run into burning problems - data DVDs are fine, audio cds are not.
The last time I had burning probs I killed nero and moved to
    cdburnerxp and SONY media.
This time I've tried uninst/reinst cdbxp and installing new burning progs - deep burner and alcohol
But still cannot get audio cds to burn...
And now this weird thing has happened with the two drives showing.
Does this sound like a hardware or a software problem to you?
    Many thanks from sunny Oz.

You wouldn't by chance have Alcohol 120 installed? If you do, then it is the Virtual CD/DVD drive used by Alcohol 120.

    Thank you.
Yes - alcohol was one of the progs I installed to try and achieve an audio cd burn.
Given that this 'dual drive' is not related to my problem, is there something else that might have changed in the workings of my machine that might explain the sudden failure of all burning apps on CD-audio?
    Thanks
    Peter

It may just be your burner speed. Try slowing it down, there should be an option to choose the burn speed for the record session.

Thanks...I've been trying that...but now the drive doesn't even seem to be recognising blank discs!
I presume that means the hardware is 'gone'?

Could be a hardware problem. Double check you cables. When was the last time you did a full scan of your system for malware. Also, reload the drivers for your burner.

Does uninstalling alcohol 120 solve your problem? You may want to try windows built in buring software....

    Thank you
I've done a full malaware run - adaware, spybot etc this week
I've tried props/hardware/device manager - update driver and got the message that there's nothing newer than what's there...how do I force it to reinstall - should I have the XP disc inserted?
REALLY appreciate your help on this.

Uninstall Alcohol 120, as theefool suggest. On rare occasions the virtual CD/DVD drive interfers with the CD/DVD drives. Make sure you uninstall the Virtual CD also.

oddly I've had the same problem with audio Cd's and different burning programs, anything else burns flawlessly, ironically. using the "send to CDRW" right click option burned them without problems.
funny, I never really tried to burn anything straight from XP before that though..
I agree the extra drive is most likely the virtual drive from alcohol though and updating drivers for the drive certainly could help.
