Changing a Mac's (G4) power supply?

I need to replace a failing power supply in a G4 Mac. Do they need a special kind of PSU, or will any old ATX unit work? I'm looking to order the parts from Newegg, so I need to know if a non-Mac-specific PSU would work.

Yes, but try to match the specs as much as possible.

If need be, there are PDF documents on Apple's website about the exact specifications of each machine. There is more than one type of Mac G4.

This'd be for a Sawtooth. I wasn't aware there were PDFs of that info, I'll be sure to read up on those, thanks. :)

Hmm... The PDF for AGP graphics G4s only has a quick warning blurb about not opening up a powersupply, nothing specific about watts or voltage or anything. Going to keep looking...

(Really wish MGs still had a post-5-minutes edit function....)

I'm getting conflicting reports. On another Mac message board they're saying it has to be a G4-specific powersupply or it won't work, particularly because of the physical shape of the PSU.

I opened my G4, it has a Delta Electronics PSU. It is square and looks just like any other basic Power Supply I have ever seen. The only issue you may have is that it is one of the older PSU's that has a female plug also to plug a monitor into.

Perhaps you should get the Apple Part Number of the Power Supply from the G4 in question and see what Apple wants for a new one, and ask them if there is an alternative. Their support number is usually not hard to get through to and they will talk to you even if the machine is out of warranty if the question is basic (which this is). The number is 1-800-275-2273.

We might have the same type of G4's here, the part number on the PSU in my machine is "614-0108".

    Let me know what happens.

I've got 614-0108 here, too. :) Same one, with the reveresed power plug for the monitor, as well.

Looks like a regular PSU to me minus the reverse plug for a monitor.

But see if Apple has some and if the price ain't bad...just get it.
