OK, I have been going through the readme files for the very first time ever.

I've gotten stuck on MGTools. Apparently AVGFree can not be turned completely off (at least I don't know how) and I'm getting a virus detected message, SHeur.SNT. I don't believe it, but until I figure a way around I can't use MGTools.

SUPERAntiSpyware was a pleasant suprise. I use a registered version of SpyScanner with good results. I had stopped using Spybot several years ago, but have installed it for the purposes of beta testing.

This particular OS (I have serveral hard disks for this computer, this is the latest and largest install) is new enough to be pretty bug free guarenteed. Do you want me to continue this thread when I try it out on other Win98se OS's, or start new ones? I have a feeling some of the older installs aren't as clean as I would like them to be, but I have nothing concrete to base this on (other than knowing my son).

Also, do you want me to go ahead and post the logs as if there were problems?

One other point, which is pidling. Win98SE has MSConfig, I used it to set up the Normal/Safe mode boot screen (shown how on MG actually). I don't know what differences between XP and Win98se there are, but it exists. I use the load screen because with fast CPU's it is a pain trying to get into Safe Mode, which is the standard mode I use on my personal cleaning procedures. Since the screen times out on reboot I tend to use it as a default.

I have asked my boy to try it out on several other machines around the house. It'll do him good and he might learn something. He has taught me a lot about malware removal.

At your service, for a twist.

OK, after turning the comptuer completely off and rebooting (just rebooting didn't help) and running a full virus scan that turned up negitive, I tried the process again, including downloading the MGtools from scratch. I have not been able to replicate the virus message.

I can not run all the programs sequentally, the computer will eventually crash. I had one lockup which I think my be because of cachman, a utility I installed because I have 1 Gig RAM on this machine. I tried disabling all the odd stuff I had running including cachman, it just locked up sooner.

I still can not get MGTools to run, no idea why. I will try an older install to see if it makes a difference.

Thanks for testing this Bill! It looks like the tools I used to build the MGtools.exe file to make it self extracting, installing and running are not compatible with Win98. After seeing your message, I pulled out an old Win98Se system and tried MGtools.exe on it and it does not run. No error messages occur either. I will have to see if I can find a way around this, but I don't think there will be any. I will probably have to give an MGtools.zip file which will have to be extracted into a c:\MGtools folder that the end user will have to create. I need to fire up a WinMe system to see what happens.

Yes this was just a false positive due to the compression routines used to make the MGtools.exe file.

So for now, hold off on any testing of this and I will get back to you with something new to try.

Yes this is normal and it is why the READ ME gives a link to using MSconfig to get into safe mode.

    Just an FYI!

I did a quick check with WinME and the same problem occurs as with Win98. Looks like we may have to go back to a less automated method with the older OS's. Bummer!!:(

No problem. I am at your service on this, just let me know what/when/how when your ready.

Just for grins I used a really old disk, one I had retired (I think my data is more valuable than hardware, usually). Anyhow, it showed up a virus on AVG, one that had propably been identified and a cure written after I retired it. I'll be running the same procedures on it too when it's time. This was the first OS I had on my new high speed DSL, without a firewall of course.

    The measures/countermeasures game goes on.
