Chkdsk freezes at Stage 5 when "Verifying Free Space"

A few days ago I attempted to do a Chkdsk but when it got to Stage 5 it froze. I wait all night and early into the morning but it stay at Stage 5, 47%. I can boot into Vista perfectly and I have kept the hard drive clean of Malware with no major infections to report. I have a 500 GB HDD and my C:\ has 258 GB free and a small 10 GB recovery partition. I was wondering what should I do next? I was able to do a basic scan since it only does the first three tests but it froze at Stage 5 when I manually did a Chkdsk scan.
