I would like to see if I could get a list of cleaners that will run a scan on non-booted drives. Superantispyware does, but what else will? That's a process I would use a lot if I knew what else I could use.

    Hi

As you have mentioned Superantispyware what type of cleaner do you want? is it a anti-malware/virus cleaner or a cleaner to clean the junk temp files etc off your PC?

Also what Windows version are you using?

My thread got moved here from teh malware section. What I'm coming up against is that sometimes it's hard to install/run an antimalware product when the malware is active, when the drive is booted up. Our corporate product does an excellent job of scanning an auxiliary drive, but I'd like to try others as well. Stinger will scan an auxiliary drive. I recently had to clean an infection that was so bad I couldn't run msconfig, task manager, command prompt, add/remove programs, I couldn't install anything, couldn't run regedit, I mean it had me locked down! I was able to run the cleaners I named when I connected the drive as a USB drive, but I'd like to assemble a bigger arsenal of cleaners to use in a situation like that.

I believe the only question I haven't answered is which version of Windows I'm using, and that's sort of not relevant. I'm not looking for specific instructions on how to clean malware off a computer. I'm looking for a malware remover that works on an auxiliary drive, such as a hard drive connected via a usb adapter. I will be using it on systems running XP, 2000, and Vista.

I have asked the questions to which I need answers. I'm sorry but I really don't need a cleaner that only works on one operating system.

Most of the products I have found for cleaning malware must run on the C drive; they won't scan an external drive. I'm looking for products that will scan a drive that is NOT the C drive, and it ideally would work on Windows 2000, XP, and Vista, but something that works only on XP is a step in the right direction. I am not looking for something to clean one specific machine. I am not a novice user. I am a systems administrator who is picking brains for other options. I do this all the time but there are few products I've found that will scan an externally connected drive. I like to take the drive out of the machine and run the cleaners on it hooked up as a usb drive to a clean machine. I prefer to remove the infected drive from our network as soon as possible, and to keep it from connecting again until it's clean. That's why I want to be able to clean the drives externally. I'm not purposely being ambiguous, I thought it was clear that I wasn't looking to clean one specific machine, but that I was looking to add to my supply of products available to do the job. Today its an XP machine. Tomorrow it may be Vista. The next day it may be 2000. I recognize that this is a volunteer group, and I appreciate all the effort that goes into running it. I don't believe I said anything disrespectful, but if you treat me like a child again I believe that could be arranged. Additionally, I promote Major Geeks as often as I can on my tech blog and when talking to bloggers and podcasters. That could change as well, I could very well recommend that people come here only when they feel the need to be treated like an idiot. Feel free to ban me now, I doubt I'll be back anyway. I'll gladly pay for the priviledge of not being abused.

    Hi

In the most part scanners can do only so much, in the end you would need the manual approach in removing the nasty malware is its too random named for scanners to find, which is why malware removal is a specialist job and I know here Chaslang has written some inhouse specialist tools in MGTools to scan areas of a HDD in which malware resides but you'd need to know what to look for to notice what is malware from legit.

Majority of specialist scanners only scan the C: drive or main OS drive (depends on letter) only, could employ a bootable USB pen or bootable DVD/CD with apps on.

Having said that and to in some part start to answer your question on tools I think maybe what your after, and just one question from me is do these applications need to be freeware and will there be a master PC that these are installed on and the affected drives are attached either by SATA/IDE or via a USB caddy or would you need to use a CD/DVD or USB pen to have these apps on to run on the affected machine?

Some apps are and will support most OSes (but check support for the OS you may use)
a-squared Free edition (use custom scan to set the local drives to be scanned)
ClamWin Portable (can go on USB pen to scan a PC or run from its folder on master PC)
    Dr.Web CureIT
Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool (good one as it updates multiple times daily, so always download afresh)

Would also if the master PC that the affected drives are connected too is to be online with the internet is to try the online scanners from the likes of the Alternative Scans from the list of Online Scans HERE, most allow scanning of all local drives.

EDIT: typing as you posted so didnt see some of your replies above and asnswers to some questions.

I notice that the forum administrator didn't give me a hard time over what he felt I didn't provide, it's all been you.

I use malwarebytes, combofix, superantispyware, spybot search & destroy, and I'm going to be trying out about seven others, one called the comedian that should be pretty interesting. superantispyware lets you select which drive to scan, as does stinger, and our Symantec antivirus does as well. I haven't found any settings that let you select a drive in any of the others. I'd be glad for you to talk me through setting Combofix to run on a K drive.

The reason my operating system isn't relevant is that I'm typing this on a mac, one of the other posts was typed on Suse Linux, my personal Vista machine has never, ever, ever been infected, and I administer Vista, XP, and 2000 machines at work. So please explain how, while not currently cleaning a machine of malware, the operating system is relevant, when I'm not asking for something to use on one operating system? Should I only ask for expert advice when it's too late to prepare to use it? I want to have these tools and become familiar with using them so that I don't waste time learning them while a user's machine is down. I need to get the users up and generating revenue as quickly as possible.

I am very good at what I do, and one of the reasons I am is because i can cut through what is not relevant and ask what I need to know. I can appreciate that maybe YOU didn't get all the information YOU needed, but I still don't see why it's relevant when what I need is something that isn't os specific.

Yes, Chaslang has helped me out a couple of times when i've been stuck.

yes, I have one machine that I keep updated with all the latest tools that I remove teh drives from the host machine and use a StarTech adapter to turn them into a USB drive. It works with both sizes of IDE drives and with SATA--fabulous tool, I've used it for lots of other things as well, like migrating a user's data to a new machine, and I've found that it works on a failing drive; somehow it will get the drive to spin up enough to get the data off of it even if the drive is on its last legs. but I digress...

Thanks, those are very helpful. Being in an enterprise situation, and since they get used more than just occasionally, I intend to evaluate several for purchase. I appreciate your help, and I think mr Dom is a bit overzealous in defending you.
