Realized around 1/1 that Microsoft Sec Essentials virus definition not updated since October. Tried to manually update... unable (update process stalls). Ran full scan but MSE ran a quick scan instead, and somehow updated the virus def'n to 12/31 (which is not right since I didn't even realize the problem until after that date). When I try manually updating, it still stalls.

Also, windows update states last update was 11/11 (which I see that many updates were done on that date), but warned that the most recent check was 2/8 (9 months back). Also unable to manually update (update stalls).

I'm happy to say and also sorry to say your problems are not due to malware. Your logs are all clean. You are just having problems like many other people have run into where Windows just does not want to update. Some people think it could be some particular Windows Update that just causes it to break. I have run into this myself while helping friends fix their PCs that they thought were infected and they were clean. The only issues is the Windows update ( including MSE ) will never complete. There are a variety of different fixes that people propose, but my experience is that in most case, none of the fixes help. I fixed one of my friends by reinstalling and it worked fine for a few days and then all of a sudden it got into the same state again. Windows Update has always been a very buggy software that is prone to getting broken for may reasons. Sometimes it breaks due to third party software especially registry cleaners or performance tweaking tools.

You can try posting in our Software Forum. Maybe you will be one of the lucky ones that one of the fixes helps. :)

    You're welcome.

Since you are not having malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    3. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
