Firstly, a big thanks to all of you who are working hard behind the lines to help root out spy/malware.

A friend was having trouble browing the internet, hijacked ie homepage, and getting prompts on his desktop to download software to "protect" his computer. So I offered to help him out.

The computer in question is an HP Pavilion ze4400 running Windows XP home edition with SP3.

I started by running Spybot S&D which found somewhere around 1000 entries which it fixed. I assumed that there would be more that it didn't find and then I came across your site.

I followed your procedures and the logs are attached below.

Rootrepeal.exe had some trouble running, with a low virtual memory error coming up. There's not much physical memory on this laptop (which should be getting an upgrade soon) so I boosted the page file size up to 1024mb and encountered the same problem.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Yes it missed a lot of bad stuff as you can see from the other logs.

There's not much physical memory on this laptop (which should be getting an upgrade soon) .[/QUOTE]Yes this is a major problem since there is only a total of 256MB of memory and only 44MB free. You cannot properly run Windows XP on this PC. In addition, this PC currently has NO PROTECTION installed and your friend cannot continue to run it this way. It is a major security risk. It needs to be upgraded to a minimum of 1GB but 2GB would be much better.

You need to move ComboFix.exe to the Desktop as specified or you will not be able to follow later instructions. You have it as below which is incorrect.
    Running from: c:\working folder\ComboFix.exe

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
Ad-Aware SE Personal <-- way out of date and Ad-Aware is ineffective against today's malware.
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1
    Java(TM) 6 Update 15

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O9 - Extra button: AOL Toolbar - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - (no file)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: AOL Toolbar - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment
Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!
