I had an infection on this computer and here's what I have done so far based on the READ ME FIRST (BTW thanks a bunch!)

    1. Upgraded antivirus to CA Internet Security Plus, which found losts of stuff
    2. Ran CCleaner
    3. Ran Super Antispyware Free which found & removed lots of stuff
    4. System would only then boot into safe mode after step 3
    5. Ran Spybot S&D and ComboFix in safe mode
    6. Ran Hijack This
    7. Turned off system restore

My Superantispyware scans are now clean, however something is trying to load at windows startup that is unable to. I get the "windows cannot find a program to open this file type..."

The file in question is raagtx.exe.vir

I know combo fix removed the main program that was associated with this (WebEx)

Any ideas on where this is trying to load from and how to remove it safely? Is there anything I am missing based on my logs?

    Thanks for your help!

    Jimmy

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You are not supposed to do this if still having problems. See the instructions.

You have Norton SystemWorks 2004 and Norton Utilities installed. Do either of this include an antivirus program?

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_01
Viewpoint Media Player (Remove Only) <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6233EEE7-5324-0281-0060-5A00C9C28CC6} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ewsyseth.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Iinl] "C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\RACLE~1\taskmgr.exe" -vt yazb
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Ypfdg] C:\WINDOWS\M?crosoft\w?crtupd.exe
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-1290236948-1684464862-1691800255-1008\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background (User 'QBDataServiceUser')
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-1290236948-1684464862-1691800255-1009\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background (User 'QBDataServiceUser17')
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-1290236948-1684464862-1691800255-1014\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background (User 'QBDataServiceUser18')
    O18 - Protocol: qbwc - {FC598A64-626C-4447-85B8-53150405FD57} - mscoree.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: efccdbc - efccdbc.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thanks for the reply, this website has been a great help!

-NAV was removed prior to me installing the new anti virus & doing everything else. I just have not removed systemworks yet...

-I deleted the old Java (sorry I missed it before, thought I had done it....)

-Completed the other steps mentioned in your response.

-The system seems to be running OK, I had to repair one Application (Quickbooks, such a resource hog & uses soo much other stuff as a component)

I'll run a few more complete system scans from various scanners but everything seems OK right now based on the scanners I downloaded from this site.

    Thanks so much!

    You're welcome.

You really cannot get NAV removed like that. Based on your logs it is still installed and some of it is even running. Having Norton installed and running CA at the same time is probably slowing your PC down a ton. I see all of the below from Norton in your uninstall list. Notice the Antivirus
    • ccCommon
    • LiveReg (Symantec Corporation)
    • LiveUpdate 3.0 (Symantec Corporation)
    • Norton AntiVirus Parent MSI
    • Norton CleanSweep
    • Norton SystemWorks 2004
    • Norton Utilities
    • Symantec Script Blocking Installer
    • Symantec WinFax PRO
Good! Your logs are clean too.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN
      • Now type combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
      • Note: The space between the X and the /U, it must be there.
    2. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    3. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    4. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    5. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    6. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
