clicking sound -- hard drive?

I have a crappy Dell dimension 8300. Recently I have begun having a problem where something inside periodically starts to make a rapid clicking sound, a sort of on-off, on-off, on-off sound, over and over. Occasionally after hearing this noise several times in a row, I then hear a small "beep". Inevitably, total system crash ensues.

The CD/DVD drives are both junk but I don't think it's them. The only other thing I can think of is the hard drive. What's puzzling is that I keep booting back up with no problems and no apparent data corruption.

Is my hard drive junk that needs to be replaced ASAP? Is there any way I can diagnose it myself with no expertise? Any suggestions?

Sounds like an immenent failure ....copy/save your important stuff asap ...then you could try a checkdisk/r ....(right click on c drive and then tools and check disc) ...

After experiencing a drive failure last night i'd suggest you backup anything important (on to seperate media) NOW before you do anything else.
