Code 31, Cd-rom drivers won't load-fixed!

Windows can't load cd-rom drvrs Error 31

Intel Celeron PCU 1100Mhz
384 MB Ram
1.1 GHz Processor
Windows 2000 Prof.
Hope this is enough.

Virus hit, now doesn't show drive D (cd-rom drive) in my computer.
OEM cd-rom F563E in device manager, shows "!"
Have tried to uninstall/reinstall, acknowledges new hardware, BUT
Windows can't load drivers, Error 31
Have tried to update drivers, but can't be loaded

I followed the instructions on removing upper and lowerfilters from my registry key, restarted.
Tried uninstall/reinstall, updated driver, again, restarted and still no cd-rom D drive for me.
The other suggestion if this didn't work was to uninstall Windows Media Player, 7.0. I don't have 7.0, I have 9.0
Thought I might try this, but was warned that if I uninstall the Media file, numerous other programs might not operate properly, so I didn't try.

Thank you for your time with this situation.
Didn't realize my operating sys had 'bells and whistles'! Guess that's why we got the 2000 Prof.
Rebooted, for safe mode, chose 'last good configuration', only options was 'back to original configuration'.
I now have my cd-rom drive again!
Thanks again, my lack of computer knowledge is really scary!
